SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Class Notes

Primary classes

Each September we welcome the children to the classroom. The returning children are a wonderful help in making the new children feel a part of the classroom community. Especially at the beginning of the year, we spend time on lessons of grace and courtesy. These lessons set the tone for the classroom. Lessons include "walking on the line", how to get the teacher's attention, walking around work rugs, snack lessons, and saying "excuse me".

In September, we also celebrate the United Nation's International Peace Day. Leading up to this celebration are many discussions about peace, what it means to us, and how to be a part of a peaceful community. We talk about kindness and helping others.

Each day the children are discovering new work in the classroom. As the classroom routine is established, we see more and more in depth work from the children. We also work to create a relaxing atmosphere, as the children are very tired when making the transition to the school year.

Toddler classes

The first few weeks of school for the Toddlers are often about making a connection to their new school. The parents have been into the classroom with their child to help make the connection, and now the children are making their own way! As the children connect, they quickly discover many exciting things to do in their classroom. There is play dough, peg work, puzzles, stringing work, books, and drawing at the easel.

The songs that we share with the children become a source of great fun, and they actually begin singing with us! Everyone enjoys the snack each day and the children are excited to help in the preparation and tasting of different foods.

At the beginning of school, the children are very tired from the stimulation of their new school, and the new work of being separated from parents. We strongly encourage parents to respond to this fatigue by allowing for good naps, and keeping the school day short as they establish the routine.

Kitab, our sponsored child

Kitab-singh Ghising Our school community sponsors a child through Plan International. Kitab-singh Ghising lives with his family in Nepal. We communicate with him several times each year, and hear of the improvements made possible in his community. Kitab lives with his father, who is a peasant farmer, his mother, who is a housewife, his brother and sister, his grandmother, who is a farmer, and his aunt, who is also a farmer. Kitab goes to school, which is only a 30-minute walk from home. Plan International has helped to set up schools closer to the villages so that the children do not have to walk 2-3 hours to reach school.

In the past year, safe and clean drinking water has been provided to the community. Water borne diseases have been significantly reduced. People are beginning to understand the importance of clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene.

safe and clean drinking water has been provided to the community An irrigation project has been completed benefiting about 30 families. The dry land has been converted into wetland and the villagers have been able to grow better crops and vegetables.
